Synopsis

The film’s message focuses on what does one do when one’s life is drastically changed. Do they desperately cling to their old life in an attempt to get it back? Or do they move on and create a new life?

Mickey, a young, confident, lovable human being has the perfect life. Recently getting a promotion from work, he can finally afford an engagement ring that his future fiancé, Rose, will love. However, Rose has a surprise for him. As they both go out to an extremely fancy dinner, she soon reveals that she’s pregnant. Mickey is unbelievably happy and couldn’t wish for a better life.

Mickey awakes in his bed the next day, alone. As he calls out for Rose, no response is given. Mickey starts to panic. Searching the house with no sight of her around, he rushes outside, to find the once-busy street he lived on, completely abandoned.

Mickey aimlessly walks around a dead city, with not another human being in sight. As time goes by, he spirals into depression and begins to contemplate suicide. Is Mickey truly the only person on the planet?

Mickey wanders down a suburban street. It had been weeks searching for another being. Looking at a polaroid of him and Rose together, Mickey breaks down.  This is suddenly interrupted by a loud bang up the street. Mickey gets up from the ground and walks towards the commotion, only to hear another bang in the distance. Mickey starts to panic and is on edge, slowly backing away. A car alarm unexpectedly goes off, which sends Mickey running for his life.

As he climbs a garden fence to escape the unknown, he looks back to check if something was chasing him, causing him to trip. As Mickey picks himself back up, he sees a human-like figure dressed as a ghost, with poorly cut-out eyes. Scared out of his mind, James speaks and says, “Did I get ya?”. Although this wasn’t quite the way Mickey envisioned meeting another person but is relieved to finally see someone else.

With what happened to James’s sister, he couldn’t be happier with the disappearance of humanity, making the best out of a bad situation. He shares his bucket list with Mickey and creates one of his own. They take turns crossing out activities from their lists. From streaking, shooting guns, to creating their own sitcom, a month or so passes of them going through their bucket lists.

As they wind down from one of their stunts, they sit on the edge of a car park rooftop, waiting for sunset. They get to chatting, and Mickey is curious about James’s old life, in which, is a sore subject for James, ending up with an argument between them both, upsetting Mickey and causing him to leave.

Mickey roams the city, and a strange runic-looking circle appears before him, along with an angelic-looking creature, who strangely goes by the name Gabe. Mickey, confused and scared, is convinced that an angel has appeared in front of him. Little does Mickey know, it’s not an angel. Gabe, promises to get Mickey into heaven if he kills James, who’s destined to go to hell anyways, doing Gabe’s job for them. After Mickey agrees, Gabe materialises a handgun and gives it to Mickey.

Mickey looks at James’s bucket list and goes out to find him. Mickey finds James on top of the city’s largest library building and sits next to him, catching James completing one of his activities on the list. An explosion goes off in the distance, embracing the silence afterwards. Mickey mentally prepares himself, readying the gun and aims it at James’s head. His skin goes pale, but Mickey is frozen from the shame and guilt, unable to pull the trigger. Mickey throws the gun off into the distance, accepting his new life without Rose.

After a moment of confusion between the two, they’re both surprised to see the sky turning red and everything starts to shake. There was an unspoken consequence if Mickey failed to shoot James, the world will end. They both stare into the distance, quietly accepting their final moments together.
